Annual Assises of Decentralised Cooperation

The first annual Assises of Decentralised Cooperation will be held at the Committee of the regions on 2 December 2009. Local and regional authorities from both the EU and developing countries will come together to discuss of decentralization and regional cooperation issues.

The meeting is a direct result of the October 2008 communication from the European Commission communication entitled “Local Authorities: Actors for Development”, which highlighted the important role that local and regional authorities play in development policy and proposed the establishment of a dialogue on development policy with local authorities.

The meeting will focus on how EU local and regional authorities can improve their development cooperation with their counterparts in the developing world, including discussions on particular policy sectors such as energy and health. Among the many high-level participants taking part in the Assises will be EU development commissioner Karel De Gucht and CoR President Luc Van den Brande.

The Assises will also see the launch of the Atlas of Decentralised Cooperation, an electronic tool that maps projects and aid contributions of local and regional authorities in the EU and their counterparts in developing countries, allowing interested parties to track the level of development aid provided by local authorities, in which sectors and in which countries.

Registration for the event is now open.
